A run-filled second day at Colombo saw Kumar Sangakkara reach a seventh career double-century while Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera put on 176 as Sri Lanka declared at a huge 642 for 4. India's openers put a dismal bowling show behind them, with Virender Sehwag crashing 64 as they raced to 95 in just 18 overs.
Sangakkara, 130 not out overnight, set off at a one-day pace with his old chum Mahela, who accelerated rapidly after reaching his fifty off 100 balls. The Sri Lankan skipper beat his teammate to reach a record for Sri Lankan double-centuries, though with his excellent knock Mahela finished with a 150-plus score more. It helped that they were facing the flattest of attacks on a batting beauty, but it was still an exceptional effort from the veteran pair.
Sangakkara started the day with consecutive fours off Abhimanyu Mithun, and flayed three successive boundaries in the seamer's next over. He then barraged four boundaries through the leg-side in a torrid Pragyan Ojha over; Mahela also struck consecutive boundaries off the left-armer as India suffered in the Colombo heat.
They fared better after lunch, when Sehwag had one kick up at Sangakkara who edged it to slip after having laced 29 fours in an elegant, murderous 219. Samaraweera (76 not out) began where the skipper had left off, while Mahela accelerated to finish with 174 off just 244 balls (20 fours and a six). He sparkled hitting over and through the off-side, but the innings' last half-hour proved mildly farcical as the spinners tried to restrict scoring by consistently pinging a foot about leg-stump.
Sehwag propelled a lively start to the Indian innings. Fast bowler Dammika Prasad suffered his predecessor Chanaka Welegedera's misfortune, consistently clocking up impressive speeds but being pounded for 27 runs in three overs by Sehwag. Murali Vijay played a cool foil as Sehwag flashed through the off-side and whipped through wide mid-on; the Indian opener was particularly devastating off the back foot. Debutant spinner Suraj Randiv was welcomed with two fine steers through point, and Ajantha Mendis greeted in similar style as India began on a positive note.
