Sangakkara and Paranavitana repeat Galle run-fest

The venue may have changed from Galle to Colombo but the script read the same; Sri Lanka, led by centuries from Tharanga Paranavitana and Kumar Sangakkara, wore a poor Indian attack down during the second Test's opening day.

Upon winning the toss, Sri Lanka wasted no time as they tucked into the bowlers. Tillekeratne Dilshan reprised his hard-hitting effort by blasting 54 off just 42 balls. Flaying through cover and punching through midwicket, the fiery opener welcomed Ishant Sharma with four successive boundaries. Abhimanyu Mithun was more controlled but still leaked three boundaries in an over as Dilshan (ten fours) laid into the bowling with ferocious glee. Paranavitana, with a second successive hundred, was more sedate but equally fluent, with some lovely punches on the up through the covers.

A tossed-up delivery from Pragyan Ojha tempted Dilshan to his dismissal (99 for 1), but Kumar Sangakkara took up the mantle by easily stroking two boundaries off the spinner to get underway. He then eased past his fifty in 82 balls, reprising the Galle double-whammy with the young opener. Both were equally fluent against spin and seam, attacking the slower balls by launching them over midwicket.

The pair shared 174 before Paranavitana (10 fours and a six) under-edged Sharma into his stumps. Sangakkara, with a sedate Mahela Jayawardene in tow, continued to torment the bowlers, with some delectable straight drives late in the day as he finished with fifteen fours in 225 balls.
