Two explosive half-centuries and a captain's spell of bowling propelled Netherlands to a resounding six-wicket win over Bangladesh in their one-off encounter at Glasgow. In a match reduced to 30 overs a side, Peter Borren grabbed 3 for 29 as Bangladesh, led by Imrul Kayes, made 199 for 7, before Ed Szwarczynki and Wesley Barresi laid into the Bangladeshi bowling.
Szwarczynki smashed seven fours and three sixes in a powerful 54-ball 67. With a barrage of boundaries against the pace bowlers and an extraordinary onslaught against the spin, he put on 61 in 49 balls with fellow opener Alex Kervezee. Cutting and pulling well, he Dutch opener's most brutal onslaught was reserved for Abdur Razzak; after being dropped at cover off a simple catch, he powered the left-arm spinner for consecutive sixes down the ground and followed up with a third off Shakib-al-Hasan.
But Shakib, knocking past Kervezee's stumps first ball, did well with seamer Nazmul Hossain to briefly stem the tide. The pair grabbed two wickets apiece, with Szwarczynski falling to Shakib, as the Dutch crumpled to 104 for 4. But that was eclipsed by another barraging half-century; Barresi smacked 11 fours in a 43-ball 64, sharing 96 with a composed Bas Zuiderent (35) as the pair secured victory with eight balls to spare.
Barresi's innings was a whirl of pulls, reverse-sweeps, sweeps and more than a few skewed edges to the boundary. It knocked the wind out of Bangladesh, who after having been inserted had started with a bang despite losing Tamim Iqbal early to Mudassir Bukhari. Much of their six-over 50 was down to a flourishing 19-ball 31 from Junaid Siddique; he cut his first two balls for a boundary each and pulled two more fours before Bukhari had him caught behind by Atse Buurman (52 for 2).
That preceded a fine 80-run stand between Imrul Kayes, who spanked five fours and a six in a 50-ball 52, and Jahurul Islam (41). Jahurul welcomed Ben Kruger with a stream of runs while Kayes accelerated against spinner Adeel Raja, who was swept and reverse-swept for boundaries. Kayes then spanked a massive six off Dutch captain Borren, clearing the midwicket stand and landing on a nearby school. But Borren struck back with venom; he removed both batsmen as well as Mushfiqur Rahim in a critical middle-order collapse that proved fatal for Bangladesh.
Shakib-al-Hasan (15) and Mahmudullah Riyad (28 not out) tried to rebuild, but Bangladesh were plainly short of what they would have aimed for when the top order was thriving. Martin Jonkman, who took two wickets despite leaking 52 in six overs, removed Shakib, and though Mashrafe Mortaza swung another huge six, Bangladesh's total was well within the Netherlands' grasp.
