When Sulieman Benn reduced Zimbabwe's top order to 0 for 3, West Indies' one-off Twenty20 at Trinidad must have felt a foregone conclusion. It wasn't to be, as in a startling turnaround Zimbabwe restricted the home team to just 79 for 7, despite Darren Sammy's five-wicket haul.
In a remarkable turnaround, the Zimbabwean spinners applied a choke hold on the West Indians; 106, which should have been an easy target despite a sticky wicket, was made to look mountainous as they stumbled to 39 for 5. Ray Price and captain Prosper Utseya delighted in the wicket, taking 8-1-30-2 between them, but it was Paul Cremer, the relatively new addition to a young side, who really prospered, taking 3 for 11 in his four overs.
Cremer removed Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo off consecutive deliveries, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who had witnessed the collapse in horror from the other end, was trapped by Greg Lamb's arm-ball for 20 off 30. Dwayne Smith and Darren Sammy fell in quick succession, and it was left to stand-in skipper Denesh Ramdin to lamely bat out the overs in a stunning turnaround.
When Zimbabwe were 0 for 3 in three overs, the hosts must have relaxed. Sulieman Benn, the gigantic spinner returning for the first time since November last year, made a mess of the Zimbabwean top-order. He bowled Vusi Sibanda first ball, and when Brendan Taylor met a similar end Zimbabwe were choking at 11 for 4.
Hamilton Masakadza, one of the side's more prolific scorers, ground out 44, with three fours and a six, but couldn't overshadow Benn's remarkable contribution of 4 for 6. The opener stitched together 40 runs with Lamb, before Sammy removed both. It was something of a platform. Elton Chigumbura went out with a bang, clubbing 22 off a Ravi Rampaul over that included a plethora of no-balls, and though his frenetic 19-ball 34 ended in the final over, with Sammy wiping up the tail to take only the third five-for in Twenty20 cricket, it proved enough. Nobody would have guessed the outcome when looking at the seven ducks in Zimbabwe's score.
