In 1958, Lahore Stadium was established and was renamed in 1974 - in honour of Colonel Gaddafi, today[Saturday] celebrated 50 years as an international venue. Stadium hosted its first Test between Pakistan and Australia.

The Gaddafi Stadium has hosted 40 Tests and 58 ODIs – including the 1996 World Cup final between Sri Lanka and Australia. Three hat-tricks have been taken at the stadium, by Peter Petherick of New Zealand against Pakistan and Pakistan's Wasim Akram and Mohammad Sami against Sri Lanka.

The world's third biggest[capacity-wise] cricket stadium have enjoyed some memorable moments on the ground, including a fifth-wicket stand of 281 between Javed Miandad and Asif Iqbal against New Zealand in 1976 and an innings and 324 run win against New Zealand in 2002. Legendary batsman Javed Miandad made his debut here in 1976 and another great batsman, Inzamam-ul-Haq, scored a triple hundred against New Zealand in 2002.

The headquarters of Pakistan cricket despite witnessed some prolific innings, had a disappointing year. As on March 3 the scheduled third day of second Test between Pakistan Sri Lanka was abandoned after Sri Lankan team's convoy was attacked by armed militants at Liberty round about near Gaddafi stadium. Eight Sri Lankan players were injured, including Sri Lankan captain, Mahela Jayawardene.

"Gaddafi Stadium is truly the home of Pakistan cricket. It is one of the most beautiful grounds in Asia and we are trying our level best to bring international cricket back to our stadiums," PCB Chiefl Operating Officer Wasim Bari said.
