Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam knew about Younis Khan's decision to step down from the captaincy prior to New Zealand Test series. Alam also advised the experienced batsman to concentrate on the domestic matches for sometime to regain his form.
"He consulted me on his decision of stepping down from the post a few hours ago before he made it known to the chairman (Ijaz Butt)", Alam said. "No, I did not try to persuade him as he has not resigned from the captaincy. He wanted a break and he deserves it", the coach said.
"In fact, I would call it a wise decision. If he is not in form and not scoring runs, it was a sensible decision on his part to go and play domestic matches".
Apparently, Younis Khan was not scheduled to travel with the team to New Zealand from Dubai instead he was to join the team after his London trip. "His booking for London trip was made to facilitate him to be available for the function on 17th and 18th November", a top PCB official said.
"We are holding an event launch next week in conjunction with the PCB for the Pakistan community within this country. The captains of Pakistan and Australia are not attending but PCB officials will do", Andrew Walpole, the ECB International Teams Media Relations General Manager, confirmed from London.
The Pakistani team is due to play against England and also host its "home" series against Australia in England next summer and both- Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi were scheduled to travel to England for the event launch", the PCB official said.
"Shahid Afridi may also cancel his travel plan to London as his father is ailing back home and only the PCB chairman may leave for London from here", he further added.
"Ricky Ponting is due to arrive back in Australia at the end of this week and will be taking a brief break before preparation for the Australian summer. He has been overseas almost constantly since May and is not due to travel internationally for the time being", Peter Young, Cricket Australia's official said in an e mail.
