A team of five senior doctors including chairman Dr. Pratap Chandra Reddy (himself a heart specialist and a founder of the Apollo Hospital) and Dr. N. Ramakrishnan, the Director Critical Care Services, were treating Huma Akram, the 42-year-old wife of the legendary former Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram, according to the senior nurse at the hospital.
It is the first Indian hospital to introduce newer techniques in coronary angioplasty, stereo-tactic radiotherapy and radio-surgery (for brain tumors). The hospital has performed 27,000 heart surgeries with a success rate of 99.6%, on par with global standards. However, destiny was not in favour of Akram's wife this time.
The hospital authorities refused to confirm whether Huma had three tumours in the brain, however, Bajwa, the husband of Huma's friend Sahar Fareed, said, "what we understand is that Huma had only two weeks illness and she has passed away". Sobbing friend could not utter more words thereafter.
"Huma was very close to her both sons (Taimur and Akbar). She used to take care of their sons because Wasim had to be on commentary assignments outside Pakistan most of the time", the husband of Huma's friend and also the family friend, preparing to leave for Karachi, said from Lahore. "She was a great mother and both sons used to have lots of fun with her."
"Both his sons are now in Karachi, where Huma's parents (Humayaun Mufti) and Wasim Akram's few relatives are staying", he further said. "The sad news to the children were conveyed by their grand-parents and the news has devastated the children."
“Huma was not only a good mother for her two sons but she was a good paternal psychologist for many and therefore many parents would miss her now".
The burial will be in Lahore where the body will arrive. The last rights will be performed at Nannies at DD block mosque in DHA Lahore, Cricdb has learnt.
