Sri Lanka still hope for Champions Trophy

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board new chairman Somchandra D'Silva has not yet given up hope for hosting the Champions Trophy in his country. "Though the ICC's CEC committee has agreed to shift the Champions Trophy venue from Sri Lanka to South Africa, our new interim committee chairman may still put up his claim in Monday's ICC Board Members Teleconference", the source said.

"The Tele-conference will be attended by new chairman along with the CEO Duleep Mendis who attended the earlier teleconference as CEO", the source added. The Champions Trophy venue was taken away from Sri Lanka citing weather report but in Dambulla and Galle during that period (September 24 and October 5) hardly rains.

If the weather conditions in Sri Lanka in September/October could permit a successful staging of the ICC Champions Trophy, otherwise Cricket South Africa will emerge as new host for ICC Champions Trophy; this was recommended by the ICC Chief Executives' Committee during a teleconference earlier this week.

Dambulla is a free-rain venue on these dates and in Galle, only it rains at night", one of the new Interim Committee member said. "We have also invited our new skipper Kumara Sangakkara and vice captain Muttiah Muralitharan to meet after the meeting", the source added.

"Perhaps we may formulate our future strategy with them". The term of the present selectors are getting over this month and the names of selectors may also come for discussion.

The Champions Trophy which was to be held in Pakistan last year was postponed to this year but again had to be shifted from Pakistan due to security fear and Indian government's anticipated refusal to allow its team to be sent to Pakistan.
